Dogon ancestor figure (N° 12918)

Figure of N'duleri-style ancestor, she plays a griot holding a stringed musical instrument, like a lute, named djéli-n'goni ch the Bambara (threw lute), or n'koni. His hands are placed on the sound box which consisted of half a gourd. Miniature characters, relating to the myths of dogon creation, form the studs of the seat on which the grandfather is installed. These symbols, associated with the role of music in rituals, refer to the magical character of the figure. Dark brown patina, eroded oiled surface. Sculpted mostly on a family's order and in this case placed on the family altar Tiré Kabou , the Dogon tribal statues can also be the object of worship by the whole community when they commemorate, for example, the founding of the village. These statues, sometimes embodying the nyama of the deceased, are placed on the altars of ancestors and participate in various rituals including those of the periods of seeds and harvests. Their functions, however, remain little known. Alongside Islam, dogon religious rites are organized around four main cults: the Lebe , relating to fertility, under the spiritual authority of the Hogon, the Wagem , cult of ancestors under the authority of the patriarch, the Binou invoking the spirit world and led by the priest of Binou, and the society of masks concerning funerals.
