Mumuye Iagalagana Statue (N° 18475)

The dynamic tension of Mumuye African art sculptures.
This Tribal figure Mumuye, made by the sculptor rati or molabaiene and from the Mercier collection undertaken for three generations, presents a rather recurrent morphology, organized around the column bust. The bow of the headdress repeats with rhythm at the shoulders and then the pelvis. The long neck on which a goiter appears bears a tiny face, like a beak, framed by ears stretched by the wearing of earrings. On the crest are also drawn lines evoking a volatile. These statues not only made it possible to call the rain but also played an apotropaic and divinatory role.
asys nuanced, velvety. Desication cracks.
The statuary emanating from the northwestern region of the middle Benoué, Kona Jukun, Mumuye and even the Wurkun populations stands out for its relative absence of ornamentation and uncluttered stylization. The 100,000 Adamawa-speaking speakers form a group called Mumuye and are grouped into villages, dola , divided into two groups: those of fire ( tjokwa (1) relating to blood and red color, guardians of the cult vabong, among which are elected the chiefs, and those of water, (tjozoza), related to humidity and white color. It is among these that the priests of the rain are chosen, initiated by the cult vadosong.
