Double ritual cut Suku, Kopa (N° 13845)

This Suku cup, with thin walls, with two spouts, was intended for ritual consumption of palm wine by the Suku lineage officer or the matrilineal supreme chief. This African tradition took place during certain ceremonies, such as a wedding. The object was then passed on to the next generation. The engraved motifs were supposed to enhance the spiritual power of the object. Medium black and brown patina, smooth and satiny, showing prolonged use. Similar models named koopha , Kopa were used by the Yaka (Fig.6 p.17 in Yaka Ed. 5Continents. )
Frobenius also collected similar models in the Pindi.
The Suku and Yaka ethnic groups, established in a region between the Kwango and Kwilu rivers in the southern Democratic Republic of Congo, have common origins and have similar social structures and cultural practices. The presence of holo and Kongo among them in some regions was also decisive in its influence on the artistic production of Suku.Ref. : " The Art of a Continent Ed. Mr. Prestel. (p.256)
