Animal (N° 20964)

From time immemorial, animals have had an uninterrupted dialogue with humans. In most sub-Saharan African societies, oral literature is based on a large bestiary in which the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the buffalo, the snake, the antelope and many others lend their qualities and defects to humans. These same animals, considered as major referents, strongly invest the universe of the sacred. Indeed, initiation, the privileged means of transmitting knowledge from generation to generation, therapeutic practices, subsistence activities, hunting, fishing and agriculture, and the foundations of social organization, constantly resort to the animal world. The close relationships, direct or symbolic, that unite animals and men constitute an inexhaustible source of inspiration for sculptors, founders and ivory makers. From naturalistic figuration to complex and stylized compositions, the representation of animals in African art often challenges reference points and shakes up certainties. Anthropologists, ethnologists, art historians, prehistorians and writers, well-known authors and researchers, examine behaviors, question systems of thought, and delve into the imaginary. This reference work, which covers major cultural areas, is intended for a wide audience. Specialists as well as amateurs can find elements of reflection and discovery on universes where the borders between animals and men abolish.
