Batéké (N° 22181)

The téké area is deployed today in three Central African countries and brings together a plurality of groups which, beyond their own political and religious development, claim the same identity. In the light of the history and the cultural intimacy common to these different groups, the apparent confusion of plastic productions fades before a real stylistic unity. Considered under the double approach of the history of art and ethnology, téké art then acquires all its meaning. The semantic intention of the works cannot be dissociated from the link that the creators weave with the "Invisibles", these spirits of nature or the ancestors who surround them. Published on the occasion of the exhibition presented at the Museum of Arts of Africa and Oceania, this work brings together the most beautiful expressions of Téké art: objects of everyday life, Kidoumou masks, statues and bed boards, from prestigious European collections.
