Casamance (N° 21030)

Casamance, the south of Senegal, has all the ingredients of an earthly paradise: luxuriant vegetation, dream beaches hemmed with coconut trees, welcoming people... But this region celebrated by Léopold Sédar Senghor has known many trials: repeated revolts against everything that threatens a free and independent way of life, the sinking of the Joola which saw many of its sons drown. The Casamance people, whether they are Diola, Mandingo, Mandingo, Fulani..., do not take kindly to an imposed authority. Christian Saglio explains it to us in a brilliant and very "lived" text. The photographs of Catherine and Bernard Desjeux show with humanism the impetus of life of this society that welcomes the traveler as a friend. This Casamance of high schools and sacred woods, of rice fields and oil, of village democracy and great revolts has all the charms, even those of stereotypes. A face of gentleness and violence, of contrasts and paradoxes that closes in on you for a long time. Catherine and Bernard Desjeux first went to Casamance in 1976 and then returned several times. A way to put their view in perspective.
