Mémoires berbères (N° 22007)

Considered as the first occupants of the territories that unfold north of the Sahara, the Berbers bear witness to a thousand-year-old tradition that is all the richer for being permeable to cultural influences. These were the result of successive invasions that marked the history of the southern Mediterranean from the Phoenicians to the Arabs, including the Greeks, Romans, Vandals and even the Byzantines. From appropriation to assimilation, the Berbers gave birth to a rich culture without losing the very foundations of a civilization born when the Sahara was still green. Through the exceptional collection of ornaments brought together by Anne-Marie Gillion Crowet, this story is recomposed with splendor and brilliance. Beyond the virtuosity of Muslim and Jewish craftsmen, the adornment also bears witness to the complex situation of women in the Berber world. The result of a partnership with the Institut du monde arabe in Paris, this book pays tribute to the Berber woman, carrier of civilization in Morocco. Michel Draguet is professor of art history at the Free University of Brussels and director general of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. He is also a member of the Royal Belgian Archaeological Academy.
