Ndary Lo - The demiurge (N° 19584)
Ndary Lo, born in 1961 in Tivaouane (Senegal) and died in June 2017 in Lyon (France), is celebrated as a sculptor of great talent whose fame has largely exceeded the borders of his native country. He left us from his too short land passage a whole population of elongated figures and many question marks.
His work, too partially reduced to the sole silhouette of his Walkers, is that of a true demiurge. This artist has expressed himself through his sculptures but also through installations on which there are few publications.
This book does not intend to draw up a critical or exhaustive picture of his work as a whole, but rather to introduce some aspects of his work that are little known or unknown. It wants to show an artist with a complex personality whose creation, particularly diverse, is the result of a long maturation and a permanent questioning, both technical and intellectual.
The different facets of his work are approached by people who have been close to the artist and who have personally known him well, or even followed him for a long time. Several of them assisted him in the realization of some of his major works, and this book intends to fill a gaping hole left by his untimely death.
Photos of the artist's emblematic sculptures, known or less known, archival photos showing works in situ during installations that have made history, are presented either opposite the texts when they shed a specific light on them, or in a section dedicated to a theme. They have the power to capture an artist in flight, a theme dear to Ndary Lo.
Some sculptures of African art evoking these works are for sale in our gallery .
