Ex Belgian African tribal art collection.

Within the group named Shira ,the Lumbu Loumbu, Balumbu, of Bantu origin and originally from the Congo kingdom, settled on the coastal part of Gabon, and in the Republic of Congo, in the middle Ogooue. This rare mask with a face whitened with kaolin, devoid of scarification marks and therefore masculine, was performed during initiation ceremonies. The Punu and Lumbu also have white masks of the same type for neighboring groups, such as the Vili. Among the Lumbu, the boyo is a local equivalent of the mwiri: he was responsible for maintaining order and making the women obey. Appearing especially at night, through the voice of a mirliton, he demanded fish and palm wine from the women, sometimes mats or loincloths.

Ex-collection of Belgian African tribal art.

Within the group named Shira ,the Lumbu Loumbu, Balumbu, of Bantu origin and originating from the Congo kingdom, settled on the coastal part of Gabon, and in the Republic Congo, in the middle Ogooue. They keep the bones of their ancestors in reliquary baskets decorated with statuettes and other prestigious objects. This rare mask with a face bleached with kaolin, evocation of a dead woman, was used during the Okuyi dance and ancestor worship, ritual practices they shared with the Punu. The face of this ancient mask has no scarification, the eyes are glazed like the works of the Kongo clans, the nose is flat, the mouth has a prominent lower lip, and the chin is pointed. Art African and the masterpieces of the statuary LumbuCeette sculpture embodies the monkey named nzighu , nziku, whose vigour is expressed by the stylization of the aggressive attitude of the figures of the Mayombé region represented standing, hands on hips, camped on their legs. The body is reduced to a truncated bust supported by two semi-flexed legs. The feet disappear into a circular base with gnawed outlines. The polychrome hues consist of a white coating (kaolin), the color of peace, referring to the Genius Bunzi whose chimpanzee is said to be the brother (Luc De Heusch); red is derived from tukula bark, associated with elements such as fire, blood, and flesh.
